The origin of the business idiom “to get the sack”

Many years ago, workmen used to own their own tools and carry them with them, normally in a bag or sack, from job to job. When they started in a particular job, they would give their tools to the employer. Then, if the worker was no longer needed, he would quite literally be given his sack of tools and asked to leave.
